How To Paint Plugs

Hagen's plug painting table gives you the ability to try your own personal designs on your favorite plug bodies. Below is a set of instructions based on our experience with the painting process, however you are free to experiment and discover new techniques. After the instruction, you can view the video, which should give a good reference for the application process in regards to thickness of coat, and speed of the air brush. Table and paints can be found on page 143 of our new catalog, and Paasche Air Gun/Accessories are found on page 142.

1) First attach the fish plug to the clamp using an Allen Wrench.

2) Place clamp and plug into desired hole on Hagen's Plug Painting Table.

3) Begin applying your primer in an even fashion.

4) Adding color - NOTE: Primer must be DRY before color paints can be applied -
Apply color as needed. When painting colors, you may paint a new color over top an existing color, even when wet. However, as you'll see in our video, when painting a light color over top of a dark color, it's recommended that you first spray a touch of primer in the needed area. At this point, the recently added primer does NOT have to be dry, and further additional colors can be added to your liking. Also note that you can use simple tools (such as the one seen in the video), to achieve precise details. Tools may include our netting found on page 143 to give you a fish scale pattern, or use metal templates for any tiger stripe or similar designs. For metal templates, it is recommended that you use brass or stainless steel as these metals will be easier to clean in the future.

5) When all colors have been added, you must allow the plug to COMPLETELY dry. Only after the plug has dried, will you be able to apply the final clear coat.

6) Immediately after applying clear coat, remove clamp from table, and attach it to the drying motor. The plug will need to spin for at least 2-4 hours, or until plug feels non-tacky, to get a smooth finish. It's important that the plug spins, as this will help avoid getting dried on 'drips' of clear coat, which may affect the action. After spinning for a few hours, the plugs may be removed to air dry. Allow plug to dry for at least 48 hours for best results.

7) When finished, simply attach split rings and hooks for the final touches.
